How to Hang Artwork: The Secrets to Hanging Artwork Like a Designer
A blank wall is a canvas where creativity and personal style can shine. It’s an opportunity to express yourself and create a space that feels like home. But with so many options available, knowing where to start can be tricky. How do you choose the right artwork? How do you arrange it in a way that looks both stylish and cohesive? There are some secrets designers use to choose and, more importantly, properly hang artwork in a client’s home. By understanding the importance of artwork height, spacing, and placement, you can transform your space in an impactful way.
How Interior Designers Choose Artwork for a Home
Choosing artwork for a client’s home is a highly subjective and creative process that requires careful consideration of a client’s tastes, existing home decor, and overall aesthetic goals.
Designers choose artwork for a space based on several factors, including:
The overall style of a space
The function of the space
The size and scale of the space
The color palette and theme of a space
The personality of each client
At Ducy Design, we rely on client engagement to help us uncover their personalities, interests, and style preferences to curate art selections that will elevate their space and tell a unique story.
3 Secrets to Mastering the Art of Art Placement
Even when you've selected the ideal art piece, photography, or wall decor for your space, the absence of professional art-hanging expertise can detract from, rather than elevate, the aesthetics of your surroundings.
At Ducy Design, we focus on three key components to mastering the art of hanging artwork.
Artwork Height Matters: Find the sweet spot where your art connects with eye level, creating an inviting and balanced focal point in the room. The goal is to strike that perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality.
Every Inch Counts in Artwork Spacing: To achieve the ideal balance for creating a captivating display, you need to have the right balance of whitespace. Allow your art pieces to breathe and engage with the surrounding environment of your space.
There is Artistry in Placement: When it comes to wall art placement, your focus should be creating a cohesive and striking vignette. By laying out your artwork on the floor first, you can get an idea of size and proportions to decide what will work best before you commit.
“When selecting art, people tend to go too small and place things too far apart. It is really important that when you are placing items, they feel connected and there isn’t too much negative space on the wall.” – Kristen Hennie

How to Properly Hang a Gallery Wall
In recent years, art gallery walls and sets have become increasingly popular in homes. They are a great way to elevate a bare hallway or staircase and showcase some of your most prized photos or art pieces. Below is our step-by-step process for laying out a gallery wall in your space.
Find Your Centerline: Measure the overall length of the wall and find your center. From here, you will add your pieces to create balance along the left and right areas.
Select Your Pieces: The number of pieces you use for your gallery wall will determine the spacing between each piece. Try to ensure all pieces will fit without feeling crowded in your space.
Focus on Spacing: In this example, we have determined that 5” in between the frames is an appropriate amount of space for such a large wall, but this could range anywhere between 2”-5” depending on the scale of your wall. It is important when doing a gallery wall or grid that all images are either in the same color tone or printed with the same filter. For example, family photos from different events can work if all are printed in sepia or black and white.
